Adobe Scan mobile app

pain points

We have been actively gathering feedback from our users. Based on this valuable input, we've identified several pain points that warrant improvement. Common themes in the feedback include the desire for users to easily locate their scans later and the need for small businesses to scan receipts of varying sizes. We then started to investigate these pain points.

Goals

  • Allow users to transform physical content into digital documents effortlessly.

  • Easy to find things later, adding a smart search feature (one of the main use cases).

  • More user satisfaction rate

UX/UI Design Lead - View & search features

During the competitor analysis

I looked into existing scan apps, uncovering valuable insights. My focus was around how these apps display scans and handle search functionalities. Some applications packed with features such as image cleanup, folder creation, and document signing before saving, intending to enhance scans prior to their storage. However, I observed that these additional features tend to complicate the workflow, introducing unnecessary steps. I also examined various approaches to search functionality—some apps can give quick results within a few screens, while others do not. Through this process, I aimed to steer away from unnecessary features and streamline the user experience, ensuring users can get to the results without unnecessary steps.

set a foundation

A key objective here is to see existing solutions as a baseline and find ways to enhance them. The focal point of my research is to distinguish ourselves by improving the organization of scanned documents and how to find old scans. My goal is to create a seamless and user-friendly experience, making the process of organizing and finding scans as easy as possible for our users.

sketch

I began by sketching ideas on paper to explore different ways scans could be organized and how users could visualize all their scans on a single screen. Once I had a clearer vision, I transitioned to creating wireframes, focusing on refining the organization of scans and optimizing the search functionality.

wireframe

In this phase, I presented my ideas to a wider group of team members. Throughout this process, close collaboration with stakeholders, including PMs and engineers, has been pivotal. The wireframes have undergone multiple rounds of review and iteration as a collective effort, ensuring that feedback from all perspectives has been considered. Here is the latest version of the wireframes that we collectively agreed upon, reflecting diverse insights and expertise.

design exploration

I experimented with several approaches to enhance the user interface. Initially, I focused on a single primary color while repositioning the navigation elements to assess their impact on the overall look and feel. However, this led to challenges as the content (all scans) became intertwined, making it difficult to distinguish one scan from another. To improve content separation, I introduced additional colors (each color represents each type of scan) to the design. Unfortunately, this approach proved overwhelming, with the colors dominating the interface and diminishing the importance of the content. The hierarchy suffered as a result. Subsequently, I experimented with a monochromatic UI, but this direction highlighted another issue. Without color variation, all the content merged into a singular information block, lacking the necessary hierarchy. This iterative process gave me valuable insights into the design, and I tried to find the right balance, more focus on the content, and not overwhelm the user with unnecessary elements.

final design

I have a single primary color scheme and a streamlined, single-column layout. The need for tab switching between 'Recent Scans' and 'Old Scans' has been eliminated, promoting a seamless user experience. I incorporated a quick-response search feature with effective filtering options, empowering users to efficiently narrow down their search results. The design is to avoid overwhelming users with excessive features and focus on the right assistance at the right moment in the search process.

results

Positive reviews and user feedback from both the Android Play Store and Apple Store indicate that the improvements we made to the scan app have had a meaningful and positive impact on users. It's rewarding to see that the efforts invested in refining the design and functionality have resonated well with the user community. This positive feedback not only validates the team's hard work but also serves as a valuable endorsement of the app's enhanced user experience.
